Japanese author Rie Kudan, recently honored with the prestigious Akutagawa Prize, acknowledged an unconventional collaborator in her success – ChatGPT. At a press conference, she revealed that approximately 5% of her award-winning novel, “The Tokyo Tower of Sympathy,” was directly generated by AI.

Kudan expressed her intent to continue leveraging AI to enhance her creative expression while confirming that she consulted ChatGPT for personal challenges, incorporating unexpected AI responses into her protagonist’s dialogues.
Her novel revolves around an architect facing the ethical quandary of constructing a humane high-rise prison in Tokyo, featuring AI as a central theme. Kudan’s unconventional use of AI in literature mirrors a trend in the creative industry, where technology integration sparks controversy and legal concerns. Last year, photographer Boris Eldagsen withdrew from the Sony World Photography Awards after revealing his winning entry was AI-generated.
Additionally, authors like George R. R. Martin, Jodi Picoult, and John Grisham, along with over 10,000 others, criticized OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, in a class action lawsuit for using copyrighted material without proper consent or compensation.
Despite potential ethical concerns, Kudan’s accolade received support from the selection committee, with member Keiichiro Hirano clarifying on social media that they didn’t view the use of generative AI in her work as problematic. While some lauded Kudan’s innovative approach to literary creation, others criticized it as “disrespectful” to authors relying solely on traditional methods.
The intersection of AI and art continues to raise debates about consent, intellectual property, and the evolving landscape of creative expression.
